How to Eat Well on a Budget

Eating well on a budget is easier than you might expect. When I need to save money (which is the time!), I shop at Aldi. I think they have really good food at very reasonable prices.

I don't always buy organic. The only veg that are better organic are green leaves, carrots, apples and pears.

Any vegetable that has a skin doesn't necessarily need to be organic - many pesticides don't get past the skin. Bananas, oranges, kiwis are all good choices.

Frozen fruit and veg are just as, and sometimes more, nutritious than fresh, so don't shun the freezer section.

I believe we're designed to eat a mostly vegetable based diet, with a little meat every now and again. Unfortunately, modern farming pactices have encouraged us to expect a mainly meat diet with a little veg on the side.

Pulses, beans, seeds, nuts and grains are all good protein sources. I always make sure I buy eggs laid by chickens free to run on pasture/grass. They can peck at grasses and bugs, as nature intended, and this improves the vitamin content of the eggs. Vitamins K2 and D especially, are both better in the eggs of pasture run chickens.

Grass fed animals have a better omega 3 content than their grain fed counterparts - omega 3 is anti-inflammatory, whereas overdoing the omega 6 is a lot more pro inflammatory. I use less meat , but better quality.
